Must have Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) for 1996 and Newer OBD II Vehicles.
IF I AM NOT A MECHANIC WHY DO I WANT TO READ OR CLEAR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC’S)?
Lets first start this answer by identifying what a DTC’s -Diagnostic Trouble Codes are. DTC’s are codes that identify a problem in a specific system or area and are intended as a guide to diagnose a particular system with use of a vehicle’s service manual. I will emphasize this statement because all too often seasoned mechanics and weekend mechanics alike “ read a code” and “replace a part” without 1st inspecting, testing and diagnosing the system that that part or sensor is controlling.
Do not replace parts or components based only on DTC’s without first consulting the vehicle’s service manual for proper testing procedures for that particular system, circuit or component! The reason is simple, is you have a check engine light on and you are getting a code identifying a 02 sensor failure you might reason to think the 02 sensor has failed correct? Slow down, what if a wire broke causing it to malfunction or a plug corroded causing the resistance of the wiring to increase? Both of these issues might cause the Check engine light to come on and a code to be set for that sensor because the readings are out of range. (Meaning whatever the specification is for that component) Furthermore a mechanical problem can cause a DTC to be set for a code identifying that electrical sensor- knowing how the 02 sensor works, what it does and what can cause engine lean and rich conditions all make big difference if the 02 sensor is “in range”
This write up was not intended to be an overview of what to inspect for a particular sensor or system but an example of why jumping to conclusion of failure can be a costly idea vs. a first time repair.
Back to the question, why do I want to read and clear codes? Think of the things you might do to your Jeep, Dodge or Chrysler that might just set a code off and turn a check engine light on….now think about the time and cost to get to the garage to turn it off when it was not a component failure but a situation that set the code and turned on the light in the 1st place. Wouldn’t it make sense to be able to turn it off?
NOTE : If the code (DTC) was set by a problem that was not resolved before clearing you can bet it will be reset and the light will come back on.
About DTC Codes:
a. Diagnostic trouble codes are alphanumeric codes that are used to identify a problem that is present on any of the systems that are monitored by the on-board computer (PCM-Power train Control Module). (Keyword: systems not component, remember to check the system before replacing a component!)
b. Each trouble code is assigned a description that identifies the circuit, component or system area where the problem was detected.
c. OBD II diagnostic trouble codes are composed of five characters; one letter followed by four digits.
-1st is a letter - it identifies the “main system” where the fault originated (Body, Chassis, Powertrain).
-2nd digit identifies the “type” of code (Generic or Manufacturer Specific).
-3rd digit identifies the specific system or sub-system where the problem is located.
- The 4th and 5th digits identify what section of the system is malfunctioning.
d. There are two types of DTC’s generic codes which are standardized to be used by all vehicle manufacturers. These identify a fault by the same number and definition for all manufactures as set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
e. Manufacturer specific DTC’s are codes that are controlled by the vehicle manufacturer. All Manufactures must use the minimal generic codes however manufacturers are free to expand beyond the required computer onboard diagnostics to make their systems easier to diagnose.
ALWAYS Fix known mechanical problems before performing further diagnostics
- Look for loose or damaged hoses, wiring or electrical connectors Which could cause poor engine performance, and may cause a “false” DTC fault code.
- All fluid levels - check the engine, power steering, transmission and coolant..
- Air Intake, Filter Housing and Ducts, check for holes, rips, cracks, plugged filter etc.
- Belts, loose or missing belts.
- Mechanical linkages that are associated with sensors such as throttle, gearshift, transmission.
- Vacuum hoses check for leaks, cracks, blockage or any other damage, and for proper routing.
- Spark plugs and wires for damaged, loose, disconnected or servitor wear.
- Battery, verify proper battery and charging system voltage.
- Verify that the engine is mechanically sound. If necessary, perform a compression check, engine vacuum check, timing check etc.
Plug in your Code Reader or Performance Programmer to retrieve Trouble codes. (Follow manufactures instructions)
I recommend a performance Programmer because you not only have the ability to pull and clear codes but you can also program your vehicle for better performance and horse power! Click HERE for product offerings and FREE Shipping.
Where do I find the Data Link Connector (DLC) to plug in my reader/ programmer?
The Data Link Connecter (DTC) is a sixteen-pin connector which is located under the dash on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The DLC connector should be visible and easily accessible from a kneeling position outside the driver’s side of the vehicle with the driver’s door open.
Plug in your Code Reader or Performance Programmer to retrieve Trouble codes. (Follow manufactures instructions)
